The role of a dietitian is often confused with the role of a Nutritionist. The difference is Dietitians translate the science of nutrition into everyday information which can be used in the healthcare setting whereas Nutritionists study nutrients in food and how they are used by the body. Dietitians undertake the practical application of nutrition with both individuals and population groups to promote the well-being of individuals and communities to prevent nutrition related problems.

The role of a dietitian is very varied and can lead to the individual working in a wide range of sectors, including the healthcare sector. This profession has many specialties ranging from oncology to sport. They are also involved in the diagnoses and dietary treatment of disease. They work as part of a team, liaising with other healthcare professionals, caring for people with a variety of health problems within a hospital and community setting.

They play an important role in promoting health and the prevention of diseases through teaching healthcare professionals and the general public about diet and nutrition.
