Like doctors, EMTs need sound judgement in a crisis to do their job and everyday they carry out a wide variety of emergency assignments. This means that as well as their advanced life support skills and driving ability, EMTs require other, softer skills, such as grief counselling and violence mediation. In general, the primary skill sets and attributes necessary to become an EMT include:-

  • Being decisive, cool and professional under severe pressure
  • Willing to work unsociable hours
  • Adherence to the Standards of conduct, performance and ethics of the Health Professions Council
  • From the results of the preliminary assessments and in consultation with the client, identify the need for further assessment, appropriate intervention or referral to other services or agencies
  • Formulate a provisional diagnosis from the analysis and integration of case history and assessment findings
  • Accepting responsibility and accountability when acting alone
  • Demonstrating the capability to act in a team environment
  • Communicating effectively with the patient or the patient’s relatives and others in their medical team
  • Managing electronic patient data with due regard for legal and ethical requirements
  • The ability to record concisely all the necessary information to support the professional paramedic judgement
