ABOUT THE ROLE
Occupational therapists work in a huge variety of healthcare settings to help people who face everyday challenges due to psychological, physical or social disabilities. For example, they will assist Total Hip Replacement (THR) patients to regain and optimise their mobility and understand how to enter a car without putting too much strain on their new joint.
Treating a diverse range of children and adults of all ages, occupational therapists seek to understand each individual’s needs and lifestyle in order to devise appropriate treatment. They will work with patients whose difficulties have been present since birth, or the result of an accident, illness, ageing or lifestyle.
EMPLOYABILITY
Working as an occupational therapist requires the individual to be very patient focused, caring and enthusiastic. They must have the ability to persuade and motivate others, ensuring they build confidence in their patients. Along with these specialist skills and qualities you will also be required to have the flowing general employability skills:
- Self-management and the ability to work in a team
- Scientific and enquiring nature, good problem solving skills
- Excellent communication and literacy
- Application of numeracy and information technology
CAREER ENTRY
To become a registered occupational therapist you must undertake an approved university degree. The entry requirements will differ according to institution but it is likely you will be required to have obtained 5 GCSEs (A*-C grade) and two/thee A Levels (or equivalent) with one science related subject. There is also the opportunity to continue your training with postgraduate courses and other CPD courses.
EMPLOYERS AND SALARIES
Occupational therapists can work in a wide variety of settings including hospitals, GP practices, education establishments, nursing and residential care homes, prisons and often in the client’s home. The main employer is the NHS, but there is also the opportunity for occupational therapists to work within the Private Sector.
Salaries depend on experience and knowledge. To increase your earnings, you must demonstrate application of skills and knowledge. Some typical salary levels are highlighted below:
