To become an ODPs requires completion of a Diploma in Higher Education (DipHE) in operating department practice and courses are available at around 27 universities and colleges across the UK. Entry requirements vary, but at least five GCSEs (A*-C), or equivalent qualifications, are usually required, including English, maths and a science subject. The Diploma in society, health and development may be relevant.

The full-time DipHE course takes two years and up to five years part time. There are extended courses leading to degree level qualifications. The training varies between higher education institutions, combining plenty of practical involvement in an operating department, learning the background and theory. Time will be spent at several local hospitals both in their operating theatres and accident and emergency and intensive care units. On qualification, ODPs need to be registered with the Health Professions Council.
