How to become a Psychotherapist – Employers & Salaries

There is a limited number of training posts in adult psychotherapy in The National Health Service (NHS) offering varying degrees of financial support in exchange for clinical practice, usually at an NHS site. The NHS Improving Access to Psychological Therapies (IAPT) programme, for example, has led to an increase in training posts in cognitive behavioural therapy in many NHS trusts.

NHS psychotherapists work with adults with learning disabilities and mental health problems. Multi-disciplinary teams working in these areas will include mental health nurses, psychiatrists, clinical psychologists and a range of therapists (including psychotherapists).

Similarly, child psychotherapists generally work in specialist child and adolescent mental health services (CAMHS) as part of a multidisciplinary team which will usually include mental health nurses, occupational therapists, child and adolescent psychiatrists, clinical psychologists and a range of therapists including those who are trained in systemic or cognitive therapy as well as psychoanalytic approaches. CAMHS teams work in collaboration with staff from many other children’s services including education and social services.
