CAREER ENTRY

As with modern nursing careers, all aspirant radiographers must complete a 3 or 4 year university course – BSc(Hons) Diagnostic Radiography or BSc(Hons) Radiotherapy degrees. Many universities operate an extended academic year to allow you to gain the necessary clinical experience in a number of radiology or radiotherapy departments. And whilst the split varies slightly from University to University, in general there is a 50/50 split between academic study and practical work and may mean that you may have reduced vacations compared to a non-vocational degree course.

All UK Universities have their own approved clinical learning centres within local hospitals and NHS Trusts and for some radiography programmes you will be placed in the same hospital for all three years of your training. However, you may be allowed some elective placements at other hospitals of your choice at certain times during the course. As with doctors training programmes, some universities operate a system of rotation through a series of hospitals throughout the training period.

University Entry Requirements

Age

By law you must be aged 17.5 (17 in Scotland) at the start of the course.

Health

You have to complete a health questionnaire when you apply for nurse or midwifery training and will be asked to identify any special needs related to a disability. Your acceptance on a course will be subject to satisfactory health clearance. If you have a disability, you may find it useful to contact SKILL (The National Bureau for Students with Disabilities), on telephone number 0800 328 5050, or visit their website at www.skill.org.uk

Working directly with patients means that communicable diseases are an issue and before any clinical practice can commence you will be screened for HIV and Hepatitis B for example

Criminal Convictions

It is normal for all healthcare professionals to be checked by the Criminal Records Bureau or CRB.

Examination Qualifications

Two A Levels in science (one of which can be maths) or BTEC National Certificate in Science (MPPM) or BTEC National Certificate in Science or Advanced GNVQ or AVCE Science. Other academic qualifications offered as equivalence will be considered on an individual basis.

For mature students there is a range of qualifications that may be considered, depending on the University. Usually the Access to Health or Science, or an A level (science-related) are recommended pre-entry courses, although many Universities will consider other options such as professional qualifications. Telephone the university admissions tutor if you feel unsure.
