Course objectives:

Avian patients are challenging because they have a high metabolic rate and hide disease well so there must be an emphasis on obtaining a definitive diagnosis quickly and thus 'emergency treatment' in many cases is in fact geared around obtaining an 'emergency diagnosis'.

In some cases supportive care measures such as providing thermal support, fluid therapy and nutritional support is indicated prior to embarking on diagnostic procedures. Equally a comprehensive assessment of husbandry and clinical history combined with a physical examination are required to help the clinician decide on a diagnostic plan.
